About County Motor Works, Chelmsford

County Motor Works was founded by JW Austin, an engineer and rally driver, in 1907. We are one of the largest new and used car dealers in Essex, and a trusted centre for servicing and repairs.

Our History

A lot has happened over the last century:
We began our relationship with General Motors way back in 1913; we have supplied and repaired military vehicles for WWI; we have sold cars, vans, trucks and even tractors; we have seen off the Great Depression and many other recessions; we survived heavy bombing from Luftwaffe raids; we have repaired all manner of vehicles - including F1 Ferraris; we have moved to Springfield from our original site opposite the train station; we have continued to thrive as a local business right up to the present day. So it's a long and impressive history!

But a lot has stayed the same:
We remain a family business in the ownership of JW Austin's grandchildren; Our relationship with General Motors is as strong as ever through our Vauxhall franchise; we still aspire to the highest standards of vehicle maintenance in the tradition of our engineer founder; we still work to JW Austin's simple motto, "Keep the customer happy"; we have always believed in supporting the local community - today sponsoring Essex County Cricket Club and the Mid-Essex Football League.

County Motor Works has well and truly become part of the landscape in Chelmsford and Essex. We have held firm to the principles of competitive pricing, excellent service after sale and helpful customer service. Today, we proudly represent Vauxhall, Alfa Romeo and Chevrolet as a main dealer.
